Mark Harbison (center) is this year's Fayette Rotary Club Business Leader of the Year recipient.  Presenting the award is Club representative Jim Steele(right), flanked by Club President, Chuck Thompson(left).

Our 2014 honoree as Fayette Rotary’s Business Leader of the Year is one of those folks from the St. Louis area who came to Central Methodist and got caught-up in what the kids used to call the “Fayette suction machine” -- i.e., he never left. Our recipient came out of Ladue High School and four years later, in 1976, graduated from Central with a business degree. Later that summer (after commencement), he joined the Commercial Trust Company and continues today with the bank, some 38 years later, now as chief executive officer, in addition to being a member of the bank’s board of directors. In the mid-1990s he continued his education by earning a graduate degree in Community Bank Management from the University of Texas . It also might be noted that he is a self-taught computer whiz and these technical accomplishments in the IT field have been of great value to his employer. In addition to professional accomplishments, this year’s recipient has been involved in countless facets of community life, often working behind the scenes and always putting Fayette first. He has had multiple presidencies of the Fayette Optimist Club and has held other offices in that club as well. In addition, he has seen service as president of the Fayette Area Chamber of Commerce. He also has undertaken leadership roles on the Howard County Fair Board, the Fayette Round Table Club and the group known as The Huddle. But what has been a particularly noteworthy accomplishment is his leadership and involvement in local Industrial Development and the Howard County Economic Development Council. Our honoree also is a long-time member of Linn Memorial United Methodist Church where currently he is church treasurer and a member of the administrative council. But his life in this community is not all work. He enjoys water sports (particularly scuba-diving), golf, and a new grandson — Garrett. He and his wife, Rebecca, have two grown children, Morgan and Jordan, and we’re delighted to note that Becca and Morgan are here with us today. Well, by now you’ve figured it out. Would you please join me in presenting the 2014 Business Leader of the Year recognition plaque to Mark Harbison.
